As it sails into the new millennium, the third ship to bear the name Volendam in Holland America's 126-year history lives up to the tradition of seagoing excellence passengers have come to expect from this premium cruise line. The Volendam and sister ship Zaandam make up a new generation of Holland America ships known as Volendam class, incorporating many of the classic and contemporary features of the fleet along with several new design elements.
The Volendam is the largest ship in Holland America's fleet and sports a distinctive funnel design that more closely resembles the classic look of Noordam than the newer ships. Among the most significant design changes is the location of the outdoor swimming pool which has been moved to the Lido deck so that the Navigation deck could be stretched to accommodate 48 additional mini-suites with verandahs. There is also an expanded spa and, in keeping pace with the latest high-tech developments at sea, the Volendam is the first of the Holland America fleet equipped with an Internet center ("The Web Site") where you can access AOL, an e-mail account and/or surf the web. Internet accessibility has received such a positive response from Voldendam passengers that plans are in the works to install these Internet centers on every HAL ship.
While there is plenty of fun and games available on the daily program, the onboard ambiance is more reserved and far less boisterous than the "rah rah" atmosphere one encounters on a party ship cruise. On the whole, passengers are seeking a quality cruise experience that revolves around comfort, consistency and predictability but not regimentation.
