The City of Fairbanks.

Fairbanks provides a wonderful extension to any Alaska Cruises or your Alaskan adventure. Fairbanks is a modern city located in the Fairbanks North Star borough in the central part of Alaska, on the Chena River, near its junction with the Tanana River. Fairbanks will come in as the second largest city in Alaska and the business and administrative center of the state's interior areas.

Fairbanks was established in 1902 with the discovery of gold and expanded as a mining town. The city was incorporated in 1903 and is named for Charles W. Fairbanks, the vice president of the United States from 1905 to 1909.

Fairbanks allows you to find and search the many different cultural aspects of Alaska. Some of the many sites will leave you breathless and native crafts will keep you busy in your spare time.

Fairbanks has an international airport and is the northern end of the Alaska Railroad and the Richardson Highway, which is connected in Delta Junction to the Alaska Highway. The city finds itself as a main center for the vast underground resources found in the great Alaska north. It also served as the headquarters for the great Alaska Pipeline that was built in the early 1970s.

The city also can thank the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, and nearby Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force Base for contributing to their local economy. Denali National Park and Preserve, the location of Mount McKinley, and several hot springs resorts are located through out the area. Fairbanks calls several events home, including the annual World Eskimo-Indian Olympics held in July of each year.
